How does it work?
CarbonView provides a mechanism for monitoring carbon emission creating activities across all relevant internal and external sources in real time. For a company looking to minimise its impact on the environment it must look beyond the bounds of its own four walls.
The CarbonView Visibility module requires a company to understand the activities it drives across its trading partner community. For example, the purchase order you just placed will result in the preparation of raw materials, transportation and manufacturing activities involving several other companies. If your company didn’t place the order, those companies would not be performing those activities.
When establishing the view over the internal and external carbon generating activities CarbonView will need to know when those activities occur. In most cases there will be some form of IT system involved. The Visibility module is designed to receive messages from any system and use the information contained in that message to show that the associated activity has been performed. By associating a carbon cost (in equivalent CO2 emissions for a given unit of measure) to each activity the carbon visibility tool will enable carbon emissions to be tracked as a result of current business activity.
The Visibility module monitors the processes and activities within the footprinting boundaries of the company and links the activities to business transactions. This allows for carbon emissions to be calculated based on actual activities and data and is therefore called the live footprint.
